Week by week

Your baby at thirty-nine weeks.

Close to ten months, emerging language, sharp motor skills and strong social awareness make a truly interactive little person. Here is what is normal.

Typical day · week 39

  • Feeds: 3 to 5 milk feeds plus 2 to 3 meals
  • Sleep: 13 to 14 hours across day and night
  • Naps: 2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours
  • Diapers: 4 to 6 wet per day

Feeding

Keep variety wide, different flavours, temperatures and textures, since the first year is the key window for broadening the palate. If you formula feed, start thinking about the switch to whole cow's milk at twelve months (whole milk is recommended until age two); milk stays the main nutrition for now.

Sleep

The move from two naps to one may be approaching for some, usually between twelve and eighteen months; signs include fighting the second nap or early rising. Most still need two naps for a while yet.

Diapers

Stool reflects the diet; steady output is the marker.

Growth

Understanding runs well ahead of speech, and that gap continues for a while. Imitation is at a peak: your baby copies talking on the phone, brushing teeth, sweeping and typing, which is how complex skills and social norms are learned.

This week's leap

Give safe ways to imitate, a child-safe brush, a cloth to wipe with, joining simple chores, since this parallel play with adults is hugely motivating. Point to and name body parts in little games to build vocabulary and body awareness.

From three months, 101.3°F (38.5°C) or above warrants assessment. Eczema not responding to usual emollients, or a suspected food allergy that has not been assessed, is worth review. By twelve months most babies have one or two clear, intentional words, though some have none until fourteen to sixteen months, and an early speech referral is always worth having. A swallowed button battery or magnet is a medical emergency, seek help immediately. None of this is medical advice; every baby is different, and your midwife, health visitor or doctor is the person to ask about your own child.

The calm way to follow all of this is to log it in one tap as it happens, then read the pattern over a few days rather than carrying it in your head. Little Bean shows this same week-by-week guidance inside the app, beside your own baby's log.

Quick answers: 39 weeks

How often should a 39-week-old eat?

Most babies this age take 3 to 5 milk feeds plus 2 to 3 meals. Feed on demand rather than by the clock; steady weight gain and enough wet diapers are the real signs intake is fine.

How much sleep does a 39-week-old need?

Roughly 13 to 14 hours across day and night. 2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The range is wide, so treat these as averages rather than targets.

What are typical wake windows at 39 weeks?

2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. An overtired baby fights sleep harder, so watch the clock and the tired signs together.
