Week by week

Your baby at forty-two weeks.

Closing in on the first birthday, your baby is busy, opinionated and increasingly capable. Here is what is normal.

Typical day · week 42

  • Feeds: 3 to 5 milk feeds plus 2 to 3 meals
  • Sleep: 13 to 14 hours across day and night
  • Naps: 2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours
  • Diapers: 4 to 6 wet per day

Feeding

Family meals with milk alongside; if formula feeding, the move to whole cow's milk comes at twelve months. Start offering milk from a cup rather than a bottle, as most guidance suggests phasing bottles out by twelve to eighteen months for dental health. Keep the diet varied.

Sleep

Most babies near twelve months need about eleven to fourteen hours total, usually ten to twelve overnight plus a single midday nap of one to two hours.

Diapers

Stool reflects the diet; steady output is the marker.

Growth

Standing, cruising, and for some, first independent steps. By the first birthday a baby has typically tripled their birth weight and grown around 10 inches (25 cm) since birth, an extraordinary year.

This week's leap

More elaborate pretend play and clear strategies to get what they want. Read together daily and name everything; word exposure in the first two years is the strongest predictor of later language.

From three months, 101.3°F (38.5°C) or above warrants assessment. Not standing with support, no words, or no pointing or gestures as the first birthday nears is worth an early referral. Register with a dentist once teeth appear. A year on, a general health check for yourself is worthwhile too. None of this is medical advice; every baby is different, and your midwife, health visitor or doctor is the person to ask about your own child.

The calm way to follow all of this is to log it in one tap as it happens, then read the pattern over a few days rather than carrying it in your head. Little Bean shows this same week-by-week guidance inside the app, beside your own baby's log.

Quick answers: 42 weeks

How often should a 42-week-old eat?

Most babies this age take 3 to 5 milk feeds plus 2 to 3 meals. Feed on demand rather than by the clock; steady weight gain and enough wet diapers are the real signs intake is fine.

How much sleep does a 42-week-old need?

Roughly 13 to 14 hours across day and night. 2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The range is wide, so treat these as averages rather than targets.

What are typical wake windows at 42 weeks?

2 naps, wake windows of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. An overtired baby fights sleep harder, so watch the clock and the tired signs together.
